Choosing the best dog gear can be tough with as many different brands and types out there. Trust me, I know - I've had to do my fair amount of research just to find the best gear for my own dog, Ringo. Hiking is a big aspect of my life as well as Ringo's. It's a great way for us to bond and burn some energy while enjoying God's green earth. Because of our love for the outdoors, I found it necessary to find Ringo a pack to carry on our adventures.
I've purchased many different packs in the past. They were usually good deals and cheap, but I found out quickly how not ideal they were for Ringo. Let me explain why. First the cheaper packs never fit snuggly & securely on Ringo. You must be thinking, well that's great! It should give your dog some room! No. The packs would slide around and distribute the weight unevenly causing more strain on Ringo as well as irritation from all the rubbing. After dealing with this and being unhappy, we finally splurged on a more expensive pack.
We ended up getting the Ruffwear Palisades Pack, which is more expensive than the previous packs we purchased. However, I will say that it was worth every penny. Not only does it fit better, it functions as a better pack overall to ensure Ringo doesn't acquire an injury or end up in discomfort on our hikes.
Now Ruffwear has a few options on packs, so I recommend you looking through and choosing the best one for your pup and what you aim to use it for. I chose the Palisades Pack because it can be converted from a pack into just a harness, which is great for our longer hikes or if we go on a hike and decide not to use the pack itself. The pack is crafted very well and has worked very nicely for us on several of our adventures. If you are looking for quality and function, I highly recommend Ruffwear gear when shopping for your pup.
The Ruffwear Palisades Pack makes multi-day backcountry adventures possible with features like removable saddlebags, two collapsible water bottles, and a load compression system. This fully-featured dog pack uses a modified Web Master™ Harness frame with four points of attachment to ensure load stability and comfortable weight distribution. Please ensure your dog carries no more than 25% of their body weight in their dog pack.
